Letters about Literature

Letters About Literature is a reflective writing competition sponsored by the Library of Congress Center for the Book and presented in association with state organizations.  This year, for the first time, California School Library Association is the organization in charge of promoting and coordinating the program in our state.

LAL is designed to promote reading and thoughtful writing by encouraging readers to write a letter to an author, living or dead, explaining how his or her work changed their perspective on the world or themselves. Students may write about fiction or nonfiction. Letters should be personal and sincere, more like a private conversation than a book report or fan letter.

State judges will select the top letter writers in California, who then advance to the national competition. There is a cash prize for the state winner at each level, and nine letters from each level are selected for honorable mention.

The deadline is January 12, 2018.  State winners and honorable mention recipients are announced in April.

Contest guidelines, entry coupon, teaching guide, letters by winners from past years, FAQs and a promotional video are available at http://read.gov/letters/

Here is a link to the entry coupon. Entries must be typewritten and mailed to the Library of Congress. Each letter must have its own entry coupon, but teachers and/or librarians may send letters with their entry forms in one envelop to the LOC.

Fake News Resource

Teaching Tolerance has a plethora of resources that are great for educators and librarians alike. Recently there has been a shift in many of our library programs to integrate diversity as well as staying abreast of current trends such as "fake news." So here is an article that I thought was pretty neat that you might be able to expound upon with your students. If you serve in Middle or High School this is an opportunity to collaborate with your Social Studies teachers too. Check out the article Speaking of Digital Literacy and share how you could incorporate this into your library program. As Librarians we at times are the lone rangers on our school campuses so it is imperative to seek out professional development opportunities. Well I hope you find this article helpful and I look forward to hearing your ideas.

Art Fun with Fox and Socks

Have you ever integrated art into your library program? Using the arts is a strategy that captivates your students while allowing for differentiated instruction. Everyone works at his/her own pace and within his/her own skill level. I find this not only fun and innovative for me as a librarian but it also allows the students to own their learning and creativity. It’s like having several individual makerspaces. Art has long been recognized as an important part of a well-rounded education, so why not integrate art into a program and a place on the school campus that all students have access too. So today I have fun with my kindergarten students and Dr. Seuss' Fox in Socks. There time was well spent because we not only integrated art but we integrated math too! Step out of the box and have some fun with Art!

National Poetry Month

Well April is National Poetry Month, so what are you doing in your libraries to celebrate poetry? National Poetry Month is recognized and celebrated to bring awareness and appreciation to poetry across the United States. Here is a great link on 30 ways to celebrate National Poetry Month I began creating a "Selfie Poem" with my 3rd through 6th grade classes and they are really enjoying the process. I have included the template for the poem if you'd like to give it a try with your students. Anything that brings awareness to poetry and literacy is a great thing! Have fun!

School Library Month is Coming

School Library Month is fast approaching and will be here for some of us when we return from our Spring Break. April is School Library Month and the theme for this year is Because School Libraries Empower Students. So how do you as a Paraprofessional empower your students to learn, create, and discover? With makerspaces you can give your students the opportunity to collaborate, create, and bring their own ideas to fruition. You can showcase the latest tech tools in collaboration with your classroom teachers, to help students discover innovative ways to present their classroom projects. Teen Tech Week was in March, but keep it going. The theme was Be the Source of Change; so continue to be that source for your students whether you are serving elementary, middle or high school students. Work with your teachers on essential questions. Post the question in the library and have students respond with their ideas, Think about starting a readers’ theater  group. Or simply sharing a great picture book that captivates your audience and gets them to think outside of the box and discover something “new” about themselves. Here are a few to share: Voices in the Park by: Anthony Browne, Bully by: Laura Vaccaro Seeger, and That New Animal by: Emily Jenkins. I implore you to take time to think of new and creative ways you can show off your school library. We should always be advocating for our school libraries but April is an opportunity to showcase your school library and its program. So have fun! Be innovative! And be the bridge to empowering your students.

Teen Tech Week

As Teen Tech Week comes to a close, what have you done to "Be the Source of Change?" There are so many great digital resources, apps, and programs that we can showcase to our students so that they can be successful, become innovative, and transition into being a 21st century learner. #teentechweek #thesourceofchange

The Library Survey has Launched!!!

I know those of us in library land who work in the state of California, have eagerly been awaiting the updated survey for school libraries. Well the wait is over... The California Department of Education has launched the updated survey and it will be active until June 30, 2017. You do have some time, but I encourage you not to wait until the last minute to complete the survey. The CDE relies on your assistance, to complete the survey for your school or schools, and to encourage other schools to complete the survey even if you or they do not have a library. Please take this opportunity to complete the survey and assist the CDE in gathering information about individual school libraries as they were at the end of the 15-16 school year. I have included the link to the library survey and here is the password: @YourLibrary (typed just as it appears here) to access the survey.

Martin's BIG Words

A fun activity to get the students thinking about the power of words! This week I shared Martin's Big Words by: Doreen Rappaport with my fourth graders and we discussed the meaning of "BIG Words." Then we created a collage of our own "BIG" words. This of course was an opportunity for the students to use markers/colored pencils/and crayons (Yippie!!!) but you can also have your students create a Wordle of their "BIG" words.

Teaching Tolerance

This is a great resource for integrating #diversity into your school library program. Teaching Tolerance has a lot of #freeresources that you can use so no need to reinvent the wheel. #diversityequityandjustice for our students.
