Here is a preview of my lesson plans for the month of August, which is the first month back to school for my students. If you prepare in Google Docs or Microsoft Word (and save in your Google Drive) then you are able to share your monthly lesson plans with your teachers.

Library Orientations that I created using Prezi and Emaze. My school site is PreK - 5th grade and I have a library orientation for grades K-5. I share important information: library rules, using a shelf marker, choosing an AR (Accelerated Reader) book, and the different sections of the library. I tweak the orientation for grades K-2.

Along with the library orientation, I created a Kahoot that the students in grades 3-5 play as a review of the information they received from the orientation video. So the first week I present the library orientation. The second week when students in grades 3-5 visit the library we review the library rules. Using Kahoot creates a fun and interactive way for students to remember the rules, but also for me to see that they understand them.

Scavenger hunts are always a fun way to find out how much your students know about using the school library. Below you will find two scavenger hunts I created. In my school district we use Destiny. I know some of you may use Alexandria so it's best to tweak these scavenger hunts to meet the needs of your students and your library program.

I usually begin teaching my students about the research process in its entirety beginning in 3rd grade. I do a research project with the 2nd graders as well, but we work as a group and not independent. I take advantage of the Common Core Standards which entail students reading and examining non-fiction text to pull out key details. So research projects help students with that.I also have a research video on my YouTube channel about the Big 6 research process.

Genre studies are always fun and engaging for students. Each year I do different activities (depending on the grade level) to go along with my genre study lessons.
Genre Bingo Card (I print these on card stock paper because the students take several weeks to complete the bingo card - after completion I do give them a small treat. i.e.: pencil, bookmark, etc.)
Genre Passport
Everyone knows the story of Flat Stanley. The boy that became flat after a bulletin board fell on him. Well we do a Flat Stanley activity in the library that the students really, really enjoy. After sharing the story of Flat Stanley the students create their own Flat Stanley which I print on card stock paper. This lesson/activity goes over several weeks, and last almost all year as the students eagerly wait for their Flat Stanley to return. (Contact me for more information on this project.)
